One of the highlights of the co-curated by Takashi Murakami "Juxtapoz x Superflat" exhibition is the participation of a new generation of Japanese ceramic artists that have made international waves in recent years. That is why we are excited to have Kazunori Hamana as part of the "Juxtapoz x Superflat" show, taking place in Seattle at Pivot Art & Culture from August 4—7, 2016.
For Juxtapoz, having someone like Hamana in the show enriches a movement we have been seeing in the United States in recent years. Artists we cover and admire, from Rebecca Morgan (also in the show), Paul Wackers, Satan Ceramics, and Joakim Ojanen all have been making exciting ceramic works to coincide with painting works or other sculptural works when they present a show. We have been fortunate to see Kazunori Hamana's work at Blum & Poe in both Los Angeles and NYC, and they note, "Kazunori Hamana makes ceramics on the Pacific coast, in Chiba, Japan. The work is both stark and full of personality, oftentimes the surfaces are striped or imbued with designs or language. Urns, bowls, vessels, cups, and plates — each irregularly shaped by not only the vast history of the ceramic arts, but also by the characteristics found in the coastal environment where he works."
