“I’m getting to a place where I can feel free,” former cover artist and Brooklyn-based painter Timothy Curtis says, “and I’m making the best work I can make.” What Curtis presents in Paris, in his solo debut with Almine Rech, Self Watering Flowers, is an evolution of form and a portal to his past. The face, what he used as a graffiti artist in Philadelphia and explored throughout his career, remains, and yet it begins to travel through time. Curtis is taking his signature and finding historic and craft patters to apply them to, giving him new life and place to grow from, literally self-watering his style with a something fresh and organic. This is an absolutely a perfect moment for Curtis, where the palette seems to be as more open than ever. —Evan Pricco
