Earlier this year, The Jaunt and Hashimoto Contemporary sent Seonna Hong, Genevieve Cohn and Bianca Nemelc to the Pacific North West for a week long residency to soak up the lush forests and cold mountainous terrain together. Removed from their daily routines, each artists’ directive was to find inspiration from their new surroundings and each other. The exhibition will feature new paintings and works on paper inspired by their trip.
West from the city of Seattle, you’ll find the Olympic National Park, and just below the National Park you will find the small city of Shelton. The land was previously called ‘Cota’ and was inhabited and managed by the Squaxin Island Tribe, later called Sheltonville when it was officially incorporated in 1890, and nowadays just Shleton, WA. With a long tradition in logging and lumber milling, and the abundance of fire and pine trees growing in the area, it explains why the city is also referred to as Christmastown, USA.
The first Winter Camp with The Jaunt included hikes through the Olympic National Park among towering trees, fresh snowfall and crisp air, as well as cozy evenings cooking together and discussing life. Sharing common threads and divergent paths amongst each other’s experiences as artists and women navigating the world, the week long residency allowed artists from different locales, backgrounds and generations to create community. Each of the artists’ new works reflect the lush natural environment found in the Pacific Northwest and one another.
Join the gallery in San Francisco on December 7th from 5-7 pm for the opening of Winter Camp.
