"Downpour is something that happens, suddenly, fast and very unexpectedly," Jonathan Lyndon Chase says. "I see this very much as how the concept of change or transformation behaves in our daily lives."
Jonathan Lyndon Chase's work is a vivacious exploration of identity. In his past works, there was a unique ability to blur boundaries between figuration and abstraction, deftly bringing forth the intimate and often unseen layers of human existence. In Downpour, at Sadie Coles in London, Chase is being his most bold, his characters like superheroes in their world, ultimately forging a vibrant testament to the continually evolving narrative of contemporary Black art, but also comic book and narrative art. With every brushstroke, Chase crafts a world both expansive and intricately detailed, affirming the art of storytelling in its most dynamic form. —Evan Pricco
