Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art (“BRG”) has announced it is now accepting submissions for Surreal Salon 15, the juried exhibition celebrating pop-surrealist and lowbrow art. Artists worldwide are invited to be a part of this special exhibition, works for which will be selected by Special Guest Juror Marco Mazzoni. Artists selected for inclusion in the exhibition will be in the running for more than $2,000 in cash prizes as well as an online editorial feature with Juxtapoz.
This exhibition will be held from January 3 - 26, 2023 at BRG (located inside the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish’s (“BREC”) historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Dr.). During the show’s run, it will be open to the public, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (Tuesday-Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.).
Artists interested in being a part of this unique and exciting exhibition can find more information here. Artists working in all media are encouraged to submit up to three (3) works for the juror’s consideration. The deadline for submissions is October 27, 2022.
Now entering its 15th year, Surreal Salon is aimed at engaging audiences in an art experience like no other in the region by highlighting the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. Submissions will be reviewed via a blind jurying process that will ensure that works are selected based solely on their artistic merit (the juror does not see an artist’s name until after selections for the exhibition have been made).
In addition to a cash prize, the artist whose work is ultimately named “Best in Show” by the exhibition’s Special Guest Juror will be honored in an upcoming juxtapoz.com editorial focusing on the artist behind the work and the piece itself. Over the years, Surreal Salon has enlisted well-known and well-respected jurors for Surreal Salon – including the co-founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, Greg Escalante, Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace, and internationally-renowned artists such as Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Josh “Shag” Agle, Elizabeth McGrath, Dan Quintana, Carrie Ann Baade, and Greg “Craola” Simkins - to assist in making Surreal Salon as artistically engaging as possible. That tradition is once again renewed with artist Marco Mazzoni filling this role (thanks in part to a partnership with the Louisiana State University School of Art). He will personally curate the works to be included in the exhibition.
Surreal Salon 15 Special Guest Juror Marco Mazzoni is an artist based in Milan, Italy best known for his vibrant and dramatic colored pencil drawings. Mazzoni's work holds a strong interest in flora and fauna, often depicting subjects surrounded by colorful plants, birds, and more. His works have been seen in galleries across Europe and North America as well as publications like The New Yorker, Juxtapoz Magazine, Hi Fructose Magazine, Les Arts Dessines, and Arte Mondadori.
BRG invites artists, regardless of media, to review the prospectus for Surreal Salon 15 and submit up to three works for the show’s juror to consider for inclusion. Details can be found here.
