Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art is proud to announce it is now accepting submissions for Surreal Salon 16, the juried exhibition celebrating pop-surrealist and lowbrow art. Artists worldwide are invited to be a part of this special exhibition, works for which will be selected by Special Guest Juror Beth Cavener. Artists selected for inclusion in the exhibition will be in the running for more than $2,000 in cash prizes as well as an online editorial feature with Juxtapoz.

This exhibition will be held from January 3 – February 1, 2024 at BRG. Artists interested in being a part of this unique and exciting exhibition can find more information at batonrougegallery.org/surreal-salon. Artists working in all media are encouraged to submit up to three (3) works for the juror’s consideration. The deadline for submissions is October 20, 2023.

Now entering its 16th year, Surreal Salon is aimed at engaging audiences in an art experience like no other in the region by highlighting the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. Submissions will be reviewed via a blind jurying process that will ensure that works are selected based solely on their artistic merit (the juror does not see an artist’s name until after selections for the exhibition have been made).

In addition to a cash prize, the artist whose work is ultimately named “Best in Show” by the exhibition’s Special Guest Juror will be honored in an upcoming juxtapoz.com editorial focusing on the artist behind the work and the piece itself.

Baton Rouge Gallery would like to thank those sponsoring Surreal Salon 16: Lynne Pisto, John G. Turner & Jerry G. Fischer, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, as well as its longtime partner in presenting Surreal Salon, Louisiana State University’s School of Art.

Over the years, Surreal Salon has enlisted well-known and well-respected jurors for Surreal Salon – including internationally-renowned artists such as Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Marco Mazzoni, Josh “Shag” Agle, Elizabeth McGrath, Dan Quintana, Carrie Ann Baade, and Greg “Craola” Simkins as well as Juxtapoz Magazine co-counder Greg Escalante and Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace - to assist in making Surreal Salon as artistically engaging as possible. That tradition is once again renewed with artist Beth Cavener filling this role (thanks in part to a partnership with the Louisiana State University School of Art). She will personally curate the works to be included in the exhibition.
