We are so used to thinking about graffiti in terms of vandalism, or festivals, or even just in a historical sense, that we don't often get to talk about a graffiti crew going out and working on something all together different in terms of placement and vision. Berlin's 1UP Crew, who created an installation at the Juxtapoz Clubhouse this past December in Miami, have been on the road since then, and have recently stopped at Nusa Penida, a small island off Bali, building out a coral farm inside an environmentally safe "1UP" tag/frame.

When we reached out to 1UP, they told us, "Some of our crew members are really into diving and surfing, we were dreamit about an underwater installation for a long time. When we were invited to the Seawalls festival in Allcapsstore last year, this was our chance!

"Beside having our exhibition and painting walls, we wanted to do something to bring awareness to the environmental changes in that region, and most of that of course relates to the ocean. The idea came up to do an underwater installation and building a coral farm, where coral could grow. It took us a while to figure out what we can do, but we did it! The world’s first underwater 3D Installation that serves as an artificial coral reef to help regenerate corals and marine life in Nusa Penida, Bali!"

The world has lost roughly half of its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Scientists estimate taht 90% of corals will die by 2050 due to human impact. If you want to support please visit Coralguardian.org to see how you can help save corals and PangeaSeed.org to learn how you can support art and activism for our oceans!
