In a time that feels like so long ago, I used to cut out images from magazines and newspapers and place them, or should I say collaged, onto my bedroom wall. It was really the only place to source imagery, to save images that spoke to you, and you ended up re-purposing and creating a whole new world for yourself. In Ever Velasquez's Chispa, that classic energy of collage, taking advertisements and visual culture around us to create something entirely new is fresh and rearranged. The title of the exhibition, as the Rusha & Co notes, refers to the spark of creativity, the sudden burst of energy in which the works came about, which is exactly where creativity is at its most uninhibited. —Evan Pricco
